Audio visual case study

Occupying over 54,000 square feet across seven floors, Leeds Trinity University’s new City Campus at 1 Trevelyan Square is a landmark development marking the University’s first permanent presence in Leeds city centre. The campus supports five academic schools including Law, Business and Computer Science.

GVAV were appointed to deliver the complete audio visual integration of this former office building, which has been transformed into a modern University campus building designed to accommodate a variety of teaching and learning types. Working alongside the client and other contractors to curate these new spaces, GVAV have provided comprehensive AV solutions for more than 60 spaces from seminar rooms and lecture theatres to meeting rooms, computer labs, specialist practical suites and state of the art boardroom. The building reflects the University’s commitment to adopting high-performance technology to aid learning, including in its Collaborative Active Teaching Spaces (CATS) model.

Collaborative Active Teaching Spaces (CATS)

A key feature of the new campus is its network of flexible CATS rooms, designed around modern collaborative pedagogies. Each CATS room features TOP-TEC Rise trolleys and Arc collaborative tables. The Rise trolleys allow all students to clearly see their group’s display, while also giving the ability for each 55" LG display to be retracted when not in use.

These units have each been integrated with an Extron NBP 100 button panel for quick user-friendly access to input switching and volume control, along with wired HDMI and USB-C inputs for BYOD (bring your own device) content sharing. The portability of the furniture means that the room can be reconfigured on the fly, encouraging dynamic group work and blended teaching styles.

Each CATS room is equipped with Audio-Technica beamforming ceiling microphones, Aver PTZ tracking cameras with 12x optical zoom and a WolfVision Cynap Pure Pro for wireless content sharing. A Loxit lectern is integrated with an Extron 10" TouchLink Pro control panel for simple control of the room’s AV system, keeping all functionality within a single, intuitive interface including displays, audio and camera control.

The main teaching display in these spaces is a central 86" CTOUCH Canvas on an electric height-adjustable Loxit mount, offering interactive touch capability for annotation and front-of-room presentation. Each group’s display can also be used as a repeater monitor so every student can see the teaching content clearly. A Huddly L1 camera captures teaching sessions, and the video is then relayed to Panopto via a Magewell capture card and an Epiphan Pearl for remote viewing.

Boardroom

On the 6th floor, a new boardroom has been equipped with high-quality AV including a Microsoft Teams Room (MTR) system optimised for both in-person and hybrid meetings.
This room’s video capture is handled by the Huddly Crew system - an AI-directed multi-camera setup that captures conversations dynamically for hybrid meetings.

Crew ensures remote participants are actively engaged in the flow of discussion using natural, broadcast-style camera switching and framing without the need for manual control or preset toggling. Due to the size of the room and the importance of the high-level meetings that are hosted within it, Huddly Crew offers a high-performance, dynamic alternative to the traditional single-camera video bar.

The space features dual pairs of 75" LG displays, one pair wall-mounted and the other mounted on a single mobile TOP-TEC Discovery dual trolley. This means the displays can be repositioned within the room as needed, allowing for flexible room configurations. Extron pendant speakers deliver high-quality audio to the room, while Audio-Technica ceiling microphones pick up conversations within the room for the benefit of those joining the meeting externally.

Making use of the audio and video peripherals around the room, the space runs as a fully integrated Microsoft Teams Room using a Poly touch panel to manage meetings. The familiar Teams Room interface gives users intuitive access to join calls, control camera options and manage content sharing with no technical expertise required.

This boardroom has been designed with a reliable system to support senior-level meetings with confidence, while keeping the technology unobtrusive and easy to use.

Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR)

Poly Microsoft Teams Rooms have also been deployed in more than 25 meeting spaces of varying size, supporting remote engagement with on-campus meetings, as well as in-person collaboration.

Each room includes dual LG displays, a Poly GC8 touch controller and a Poly Studio R30 bar with integrated 3-mic array, powerful speakers and 120° field of view. As in the boardroom, Microsoft Teams Room systems have been implemented a consistent, user-friendly video conferencing experience throughout the building.

Lecture theatre

City Campus’s fourth floor lecture theatre has been purpose-designed to support engaging in-room lectures as well as hybrid learning. The room has been designed to deliver high quality visuals for everybody engaging with the session.

Leeds Trinity Unviersity Lecture Theatre

For those present in the room, the main displays are twin Hikvision LED walls, delivering bright and clear full-HD visuals across two 110" displays. Each LED wall is comprised of 2x2 panels with a 1.56mm pixel pitch at 60Hz. The result is a vibrant, high-contrast display that is visible for all students using the room.

Mounted either side of the LED walls are two Fohhn FS-110 slim line speakers providing clear and evenly distributed sound with a clean aesthetic. The main displays are supported by dual 75" wall-mounted LG repeater screens, giving extra visibility for those sitting further back, especially when the room is full.

Like other learning spaces in this building, the lecture theatre system has also optimised for those not in the room, with AVer 4K PTZ tracking cameras capturing lectures in high definition with smooth, hands-free video capture and streaming, while audio is captured by two Audio-Technica beamforming ceiling microphones.

Teaching staff can control the system with ease via an Extron TLP Pro 1025T tabletop touch panel, providing a consistent interface with the wider campus system. Input switching, volume control and display management are all integrated into a single point of control. A WolfVision Cynap Pure Pro has also been integrated in this space for wireless presentation, allowing staff or students to share content from any device without the need for extra cables.

This lecture theatre provides a high-spec, future-ready learning environment that offers the scale, flexibility and features required for flagship lectures, guest speakers and external events.

To do

Practical learning environments

As well as traditional meeting and learning environments, the new campus also features hands-on learning facilities designed to mirror real-world professional settings for students in law and policing.

These specialist areas, including a fully functioning mock courtroom, reception area, control room and two interview pods, required carefully planned bespoke AV solutions to support realistic training and assessment. In the mock courtroom, students can experience the dynamics of legal proceedings in a space that has been designed to feel and function like the real thing.

Each seating position is fitted with an Audio-Technica gooseneck microphone, supported by a ceiling mic to ensure complete audio capture coverage throughout the room. Two AVer PTZ tracking cameras provide high-resolution video capture.

The system in the courtroom space is built using Extron NAV encoders and scaling decoders, allowing high-quality, low-latency transmission of audio and video and giving tutors the ability to record, monitor or switch content on demand.

A retractable 98" Euroscreen electric projection screen and Panasonic laser projector provide the room’s main visual content, with a 75" LG display mounted to a portable trolley at the rear of the room for secondary content or as a comfort monitor for those at the front. Extron ceiling speakers ensure audio is evenly distributed throughout, driven by a DSP matrix.

Adjacent to the courtroom are mock holding cells and a reception area to extend the realism of courtroom scenarios and allow the faculty to curate full simulation exercises. In the reception, a 49" LG display presents a real-time multi-room view with live feeds displayed from the various AV and CCTV sources.

LTU AV system

A central control room houses the AV equipment along with a dedicated IP-based CCTV system. This includes an 8-channel OYN-X Eagle NVR, linked to four 8MP turret cameras for secure video capture. A dedicated iiyama monitor allows operators to observe and monitor the different spaces in the facility in real time.

The two interview rooms function as stand-alone Microsoft Teams Rooms with a similar set up to the building’s other meeting rooms. Each room is fitted with a Poly Studio R30 video bar, GC8 touch panel for meeting control, Extron ceiling speaker, and a 43" LG display.

Working together, these practical spaces support a range of hands-on learning situations for legal, criminology and policing students to work symbiotically. The AV setup here provides a high-performance in-room experience, as well as remote observation capability and secure recording within a realistic and reliable learning environment. Complemented by its AV system to aid learning, the facilities on offer for current and prospective new students help the University continue to stand out as a leading destination for criminology, law and policing.
