The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is one of the world's leading cancer research organisations and the UK's leading academic research centre dedicated exclusively to cancer.

As an independent charity and higher education institution, the ICR brings together world-class scientists, clinicians and students, driving breakthroughs in cancer biology while educating the next generation of researchers and healthcare professionals.

With collaboration and knowledge sharing central to its mission, GVAV were commissioned to deliver a comprehensive upgrade to its existing lecture theatre at the Institute’s Sutton site. The aim was to create a future-ready learning environment where researchers, lecturers, students and remote participants could connect effortlessly and inclusively, supporting everything from everyday teaching to specialist presentations and collaborative research events.

To bring this vision to life, GVAV designed and delivered a fully integrated AV solution centred around high-quality visual communication and intuitive operation.

The solution was designed with ease of use, flexibility and long-term reliability at its core, enabling presenters to focus on sharing knowledge while ensuring every participant enjoys the same high-quality experience, whether in the lecture theatre or joining remotely.

At the heart of the lecture theatre, a large-format Absen NX2.5 2.0mm LED video wall, mounted on a Peerless-AV video wall stand, forms the centrepiece of the space. Its exceptional image quality allows detailed research data and medical imagery to remain clear and legible from every seat, accompanied by Samsung 65-inch 4K displays on either side that further enhance the visibility of presentation content throughout the lecture theatre.


Supporting lecturers at the front of the room is an integrated TOP-TEC Messenger lectern, providing a dedicated teaching position with integrated AV connectivity and intuitive controls allowing presenters to quickly access content and begin sessions with minimal setup.

Audio performance is delivered via a Q-SYS Core 24f processing platform, complemented by Ecler amplification and loudspeakers to ensure clear, consistent speech and audio reinforcement across the lecture theatre.

To further enhance speech intelligibility, TK-Team full-height acoustic wall panelling was installed by GVAV, reducing reverberation and creating a controlled acoustic environment that supports clear communication throughout the space.

A combination of Sennheiser TeamConnect ceiling, wireless handheld and bodypack microphones, together with a lectern-mounted gooseneck microphone, ensures presenters and audience members are captured clearly for both those in the room as well as remote attendees.

Bringing the entire solution together is a Crestron RMC4 4-Series control system, integrated with a Crestron Flex UC-CX100-T Microsoft Teams Rooms solution. Its tabletop touch screen provides intuitive room control alongside one-touch access to scheduled meetings, providing users with a familiar, consistent experience, whilst allowing lecturers, guest speakers and researchers to seamlessly transition between in-room presentations and hybrid collaboration. Combined with BYOD connectivity, the solution supports both native Teams meetings and user-managed conferencing, offering the flexibility to accommodate a wide variety of workflows.

To further support the lecture theatre's hybrid capabilities, Crestron 1 Beyond intelligent PTZ cameras provide wide-ranging coverage of the space, with 20x optical zoom capturing presenters in high resolution wherever they are positioned. Using built-in visual AI, the cameras automatically track and frame the active speaker, creating a more natural viewing experience for remote attendees during lectures, presentations and collaborative research sessions.

Presentation sources are managed via a WyreStorm 4x4 matrix providing reliable 4K content distribution and HDMI connectivity, ensuring high-quality delivery throughout the lecture theatre for a wide range of devices.
