Planning to add a brand new course to their diverse academic offering and with it, a new facility at their Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University’s Department of Creative Technology sought to establish a state-of-the-art E-Sports lab in 2024.

Bournemouth University esports set up

To meet the ever-growing popularity of E-Sports and game design in Higher Education, the University’s aim was to create a fully integrated learning environment that provided the technology to engage in both individual and team-based E-Sports learning activities. Each work station needed to be set up to support live streaming, recording and professional-level gameplay while maintaining a centralised production workflow.

As sole supplier for the University’s audio visual requirements, GVAV worked with the client to design, supply and install 18 custom-designed work stations in the new facility. The setup needed to include high-quality video and audio capture, and provide flexible patching and routing of signals within the room.

To do

To meet these requirements, the project required a cutting-edge AV setup with bespoke gaming desks designed for efficiency and adaptability. TOP-TEC Nebula gaming desks were custom-designed to meet the unique needs of this project. The furniture provides a means to securely lock the PCs and other peripherals in situ, keeping everything tidy and minimising the risk of theft.

Bespoke lighting at each desk including LED strips and backlit University logo add a vibrant, polished detail. A secured cavity in the underside of the desk houses all the interconnections and power distribution for the desk. Students can shut down their workstations when they’re done using an integrated power switch, and a patch panel gives the freedom to make changes to audio and video routing without having to change any of the cables connected to the key devices. Built-in USB ports also allow the user to conveniently connect USB peripherals such as external hard drives.

A key part of this room’s functionality is the ability for users to live-stream gameplay as well as a video stream of themselves. For this, a Blackmagic Studio camera is mounted above each desk, capturing the user in high definition up to 4K. For audio, each desk is outfitted with a RØDE Podmic mounted on a boom arm. A RØDECaster Duo links to two XLR ports in the desk's patch panel, enabling the addition of two extra microphones for mixing.

Each desk also includes a Blackmagic ATEM SDI Pro ISO switcher, which gathers and mixes video and audio inputs from the 4K camera, gaming PC and microphones, and provides HD quality streaming directly to YouTube via the University network. A Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus is installed at each work station for high-quality recording and playback.

A centralised lecturer control desk provides the ability to manage and distribute content in the space. Equipped with a Blackmagic Videohub 20x20 12G, the teaching team are able to edit and mix the signals from each desk. These mixed signals are sent back to the secondary monitors at each desk and can be routed to the room’s wall-mounted NEC displays. An Extron HDMI switcher provides a high level of connectivity within the room.

To do

Connectivity and cable management are crucial to this project's success. Each streaming desk is hardwired into the network to ensure low-latency, high-performance connections. Custom micro SDI cables were selected to prevent signal degradation and ground loop isolators have been implemented to eliminate audio interference in the space. The room contains a range of high quality equipment to support lecture capture.

To best support students in mastering their craft as E-sports digital technologists, content creators, or event organisers, industry-leading streaming production equipment and AV systems have been provided to deliver a high-performance learning experience. The new suite at Bournemouth University is a leading E-Sports facility and befitting home for the University’s brand new course, allowing for professional-grade content creation, mixing and live streaming in a flexible and adaptable environment for gaming and academic use.

“When we embarked upon our journey to create a unique E-Sports Digital Technology lab in 2024, we sought to secure the advice and assistance from a range of industry leading partners. GVAV have been a core part of the team who have helped us realise our visions, and have consistently risen to the technical challenges that have occurred along the way!

Our streaming booths contain a huge amount of technical equipment and lots of cabling, and the way in which the GVAV team created a truly professional installation and cable management system has far exceeded our expectations”
